The Health Safety Executive have published guidance ‘Advice To Users of Bunsen Burner Wire Gauzes That May Contain Asbestos’ as they have become aware of two UK laboratory suppliers that have supplied mesh gauzes with asbestos-containing centres. These mesh gauzes are conventionally used over tripods and Bunsen burners in educational establishments such as universities, schools and colleges. Asbestos is classed as hazardous, and the use and supply is strictly prohibited in the EU/UK. In-line with legal requirements to prevent exposure to asbestos, these gauzes should no longer be used and must be disposed of by a licensed contractor.

It is not adequate to accept letters or catalogue descriptions from suppliers stating that their gauzes are asbestos free but a copy of a test certificate from an organisation UKAS accredited in the testing of bulk samples for asbestos materials should be sought. The certificate should confirm that a sample of your gauzes have tested negative for asbestos.

At Cavendish Laboratories we are able to carry out a test on the gauzes to confirm the presence or absence of asbestos and provide a UKAS certificate.

The cost for this service is £ 18 plus VAT for testing of up to four units. This could save you on replacement or on costly disposal through a licensed contractor if your gauzes turn out to be asbestos free.
